web The National League for Nursing Pre-Admission Examination (NLN PAX) for registered nursing programs is a standardized entrance exam for potential nursing students who seek admittance into nursing schools nationwide.  The PAX is a multiple choice format timed exam, and is comprised of three main areas:

  • Verbal skills,which consist of both word knowledge and reading comprehension;
  • Mathematics which inlcudes basic calculations, word problems and incorporates algebra, geometry conversions, graphs and applied mathematics; and
  • Science, which examines general biology, chemistry, physics and earth science.

The PAX-RN evaluates the academic ability of prospective RN students. The exam tests basic verbal, math, and science skills at a high school level. The test contains three sections: verbal ability, mathematics, and science. The verbal section assesses work knowledge, reading comprehension, and critical thinking. The maths section assesses the ability to solve mathematical problems involving integers, conversions, fractions, decimals, algebra and geometry. Calculators are not permitted. The science section assesses knowledge in the areas of general biology, human anatomy and physiology, chemistry, and physics. Applicants must achieve the following scores in order to meet admission testing requirement:

Composite score 70th percentile or above

Verbal Score 50th percentile or above

Math Score 50th percentile of above

Science score of 50th percentile or above

The PAX-RN may only be repeated twice (total of 3 times. There is a six (6) month waiting period between testing sessions. All section of the exam must be taken each time an applicant is completing the PAX-RN.

The PAX costs $37.00. Registration for the PAX-RN is processed online through the National League of Nursing web site. Please refer to the NLN website for payment, re-scheduling, and refund policies. Registration ends 2 days prior to the scheduled test date.

The PAX is a multiple choice format, timed exam and is comprised of three (3) main areas:  verbal, mathematics and science.

Examinees with disabiltities requiring reasonable accommodations for the PAX-RN MUST submit prior to your test date, documentation and written request for accommodation. Once your documentation is received and evaluated, you will be contacted by the Director of the Learning Commons to complete the National League for Nursing (NLN) Special Testing Accommodation Form.  Once the NLN approves your request for accommodation, you will receive details on registering for the PAX-RN testing.  Please note:  it may take up to two (2) weeks or longer to respond to some accommodation requests.
