KVCC names Student of the Year

FAIRFIELD – Kennebec Valley Community College (KVCC) has named Kristie Harris of Waterville as the College’s Student of the Year for 2012.

Harris, who is completing her second year in KVCC’s Nursing program, was one of nine finalists considered for the honor. A selection committee made up of faculty members and staff chose her based on a variety of qualifications including academic performance, community involvement, and an essay about her college experience.

“It is an honor even to be nominated for this award, and for the selection committee the choice is all about service, leadership, and academic excellence,” KVCC Dean of Students Karen Normandin said. “The Student of the Year is a role model, someone whose experiences represent those of their fellow students and show them by their success – you can do it too.”

Harris, 33, will graduate in May with an Associate in Science Degree in Nursing (ADN), and hopes to work as a psychiatric nurse while pursuing a four-year Nursing degree at the University of Maine at Fort Kent this fall.

A former mortgage broker, Harris said her interest in nursing began as a result of friendships forged with nurses during a family medical crisis. A wife, mother, and full-time worker, she believed college was not an option for her, but was encouraged by the supportive staff at KVCC to overcome many challenges and pursue her goal and a new career.

Now, six weeks from graduation, Harris said it is unbelievable to her that she is nearly there, and she credited faculty and staff at KVCC as well as friends and family for providing the support that she needed to achieve success.

All Maine Community College Students of the Year will be honored at a ceremony April 25th in Augusta, where they will be presented with scholarships and recognized for their achievements.
