3. How many classes are high school students eligible to take under this
program and what is the cost to the student?
Qualified
students may enroll in up to six credit hours per semester

the summer

Please note: High school students are restricted to general education courses
where space is available and are responsible for paying any additional fees and
book costs.
4. What are the suggested prerequisite courses needed for a high
school student hoping to pursue a degree or certificate in the Allied
Health field?
-
Biology with a laboratory component is essential for all KVCC Allied Health degree and certificate programs.
-
Chemistry with a laboratory component is required for the Physical Therapist Assistant and Nursing programs and is strongly recommended for the Respiratory Therapy program.
-
Physics is strongly recommended for the Radiologic Technology program.
-
Algebra I is required for all degree programs in the Allied Health field.
Algebra II is strongly recommended for Respiratory Therapy, Radiologic Technology and Nursing.
5. Are students required to submit SAT/ACT scores?
SAT/ACT scores are not required for admission to Kennebec Valley Community College. If a student takes the SAT or ACT and is satisfied with his/her scores, he/she is encouraged to submit them. SAT/ACT scores may be used to waive placement testing for students applying to certain programs.
6. What entrance/placement tests are required for the various degree
programs?
Accuplacer
This is the most widely used placement test for incoming students and is required for all programs except for allied health programs (when student is entering allied health program during the traditional fall semester).
Accuplacer is computer-based, untimed and assesses students in the areas of writing skills, reading comprehension, arithmetic and algebra (when algebra is required for the chosen degree or certificate program).
HOBET
This entrance exam is only required for the following programs: Occupational Therapy Assistant, Physical Therapist Assistant, Respiratory Therapy and Radiologic Technology.
The HOBET exam has a timed, 3-hour, fill-in-the-bubble format and measures the student’s ability in reading, mathematics (emphasis on decimals, fractions and percents) and written expression skills (sentence structure, grammatical usage, capitalization and punctuation rules, etc.)
HESI
This test is only used for high school students applying directly to KVCC’s Nursing program. The HESI is offered twice a semester and high school students will be informed of the scheduled testing dates once an application has been submitted to the College. Students will be responsible for filling out the test registration form and returning it to the Admissions Office with the $30 fee by the date indicated. Due to the high volume of applicants for the Nursing program, results from the HESI exam in combination with the high school transcript allow the Admissions Office to review high school students for designated “high school slots”. The HESI test is a comprehensive exam covering: Math, Reading Comprehension, Vocabulary & General Knowledge, Grammar, Biology, and Chemistry. Students are encouraged to purchase the HESI study guide in the KVCC bookstore at a cost of $25.

7. Does Kennebec Valley Community College have an application
deadline?
KVCC has a rolling admissions policy for all certificate and degree programs with the exception of Radiologic Technology. Any high student applying to this program must submit his/her application and have taken the HOBET exam
before Christmas.
8. Are KVCC’s credits transferable to other post-secondary institutions?
Yes! Since we have transitioned over to a Community College, the transferability of credits from KVCC, or any of the other six community colleges in Maine, to other four-year institutions, has become more streamlined. The two general rules of thumb about transferring credits are: most institutions will only honor at least a “C” average in a class and general education classes (i.e. English 101, Psychology 101) are the most likely to transfer with the least amount of questioning. Math and Science classes tend to be the trickiest since curricula among institutions is more apt to vary in these subject areas.
9. What is AdvantageU?
It is a formal agreement between the Maine Community College system and the University of Maine system which provides community college graduates of the Associate in Arts in Liberal Studies program guaranteed admission with junior standing at any of the university system campuses.
10. How do students enroll in the AdvantageU program?
Interested Liberal Studies candidates need to fill out the “Yes, I Want to Participate” form (found in every community college’s Admissions Office) before completing 45 college credits. After the student completes 45 credits (and has a minimum 2.5 GPA) the student should contact KVCC’s AdvantageU representative, Jim Peacock
jpeacock@kvcc.me.edu, to complete the “Intent to Enroll” form. This form will serve as the abbreviated application for all seven University of Maine campuses and exempts students from having to pay the standard application fee(s).
