Strategic Planning

Strategic Planning at KVCC

Kennebec Valley Community College's strategic planning process for 2015 - 2020 will provide a framework for defining broad, measureable goals and outcomes designed to strengthen and enhance our academic excellence, student engagement, and community ties.

KV2020 builds on KV's previous five-year plan, as well as the Maine Community College System's own five-year plan, and will serve as a road map to help focus our resources and energies toward our mission of preparing our students to achieve their educational, professional, and personal goals through the shared values of responsibility, integrity, and respect.

This inclusive and data-driven plan will recognize the ongoing and significant changes in the higher education landscape over the last five years, changes in the College's employment, business and legislative environment, as well as the shifting demographic profile of the region.

Process & Timeline

The planning process began on May 8th with a college meeting to conduct a SWOT Analysis.  SWOT is an acronym for Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats.  It is a broad look at the current internal and external "landscape" of the institution.

May 12 was the first meeting of the Environmental Scan Sub-Committee who met several times to plan for the next step in the process, the Environmental Scan to be held on June 29th.  Brown and Weiner define an Environmental Scan as "a kind of radar to scan the world systematically and signal the new, the unexpected, the major, and the minor."

September 2 is the designated date for the Visioning step which will also involve the entire college. Participants will be asked to envision what the college could look like, be like, be doing by 2020.

The exact timing of these next steps are difficult to predict, but the schedule to completion of the plan is:

October, 2015 will see groups meeting to develop Action Plans for the Vision categories chosen on September 2.

November - December, 2015 approval of a Draft Plan by the Strategic Planning Committee.

January, 2016 present Draft Plan to full community for review and feedback.

May, 2016 final KVCC Strategic Plan for 2020, approved.
