Advantages to Studying Mental Health at KVCC

KVCC's mental health program provides students with the knowledge and skills they need to work with individuals with prolonged, pervasive, and persistent mental illness

KVCC's Mental Health Program covers all of the CORE competencies for you to receive your MHRT/C Certification

Specialized training in Motivatonal Interviewing, Counseling, Crisis Intervention, Substance Abuse, and Case Management distinguish the program.
______________________________________________

Hands-on experience with the State of Maine APS System is integrated into the program.
______________________________________________

Experiential learning opportunities are available at different mental health agencies across the state as part of the program's Service-Learning initiatives.

Innovative course delivery and course schedules allow students to balance their family and work obligations with their goals to complete their degree.

Regular, face-to-face courses are scheduled to meet only once per week, for three hours.  This allows individuals who are working to schedule time off to attend class.
______________________________________________

The Fall schedule of face-to-face classes includes all the courses needed for the Provisional MHRT/C scheduled on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
______________________________________________

The Spring schedule of face-to-face classes includes all the courses needed to complete the full MHRT/C Certfication.

The program is working closely with a number of community agencies to allow them to teach KVCC credit courses to their employees on a schedule that best meets the needs of the agency.  For more information on this contact Dr. Mark Kavanaugh.

Program faculty are experienced in the real world of mental health treatment and rehabilitation and enrich their teaching with practical knowledge.

Both the full- and part-time Faculty who teach in the program have years of practical, hands-on experience in the field of mental health.

Most Faculty hold clinical licenses.
______________________________________________

Faculty receive ongoing guidance and training regarding teaching methods and the best ways to translate lived work experience into instruction.
______________________________________________

Most Faculty continue to work in the mental health field and are therefore very knowledgeable and current as to the state of the practice of mental health treatment and rehabilitation.

The mental health program uses technology to engage students, to create innovative classroom experiences, and to reduce overall costs to students.

All the courses in the program invlove a deep use of online technology to enhance the experience of students.
______________________________________________

The course designers for the program are experts in adult learning and the use of technology in the classroom.
______________________________________________

KVCC is a leader in supporting the use of technology in the classroom.
______________________________________________

Through an innovative 1:1 iPad program which is proposed to begin in Spring 2016, an iPad will be placed into the hands of every Mental Health student.  The iPad will provide each student with excellent technological tools, resources, and applications to enhance their learning.  The iPad project will also greatly reduce the cost of textbooks for students.

You can complete your entire mental health program online.

Both the Certificate and Associates Degree programs can be taken completely online.
______________________________________________

The design of the online courses in the Mental Health program have served as a model for other programs at KVCC.
______________________________________________

Instructional Designers who have been involved in the development of our online courses have expertise in adult learning, online teaching methods, and the importance of social interaction in the online course environment.  The online courses are every bit as engaging as our face-to-face classes.
______________________________________________

Every core Mental Health course that leads to the MHRT/C is offered online EVERY semester.  This allows students the flexibility to achieve the MHRT/C in the shortest time possible at any institition in Maine.
